Haflinger

Origin and Development of the Breed

Haflinger horses originated in the area of the former Tyrol through the crossing of native Austrian Alpine draught mares with Arabian stallions, and they are still bred there today. The breed is now found worldwide and is bred in more than sixty countries. It is estimated that the global population of Haflinger horses is close to 300,000. Today, the breed is also widespread throughout Slovenia.

Breed Description

Haflinger horses are of a smaller frame. They have a short, dry, noble head with a straight or slightly concave nasal profile, a broad forehead, and large, bright eyes. The neck is of medium length and well muscled. The withers are well defined. The medium-length body is broad, deep, and well muscled. The loins are short, and the croup is moderately sloping and well muscled. The legs, with well-formed joints and strong, correctly shaped hooves, are correctly formed, strong, and dry. The horses are mostly chestnut in colour with a light, more rarely darker, mane.

Breeding Purpose

Breeders typically raise Haflinger horses extensively using traditional methods. During the growing season, young horses and broodmares with foals are mainly kept on pasture. As good working horses, they are suitable for lighter agricultural tasks, particularly in alpine and hilly regions. An economic aspect of breeding often involves producing foals for slaughter. They are also suitable for recreational riding and tourism. Many of these horses can be trained for activities and therapies assisted by horses. The breed plays an important role in connecting urban and rural communities.
