Brown Cattle

Origin and Development of the Breed

Brown cattle originate from Switzerland and were also widespread in the Austrian regions of Vorarlberg and Tyrol, as well as in Bavaria, Germany. In the past, progressive breeders and manor estates in Slovenia purchased Brown cattle from the Montafon region of Vorarlberg, as they were considered better milk producers. The Brown breed began to be systematically introduced in Slovenia at the beginning of the 20th century, when local (autohtonous) cattle populations started to be improved with this breed. It became the most widespread breed in Dolenjska, the Karst region, and the Goriška region. In Goriška, which was under Italian rule between the two World Wars, Brown cattle from Switzerland and Tyrol were introduced. In the 1960s, mass improvement of the Brown breed with the American Brown Swiss breed began, which was already a highly specialised dairy breed. Today, the breed is found across almost the entire territory of Slovenia, most notably in Primorska, parts of the Ljubljana Basin, Notranjska, Dolenjska, the Savinja Valley, and the Šaleška Valley.

Breed Description

Various shades of brown to grey coat colour are possible, with occasional lightly pigmented white areas. The mucous membranes, horn tips, and hooves are dark. Typical exterior characteristics include a large body frame, a voluminous chest continuing into a well-developed rumen, and less pronounced muscling of the hindquarters.

Breed Characteristics

Brown cattle are distinguished by their adaptability to modest rearing conditions, longevity, hardiness, and excellent utilisation of roughage. Their dark hooves allow them to graze successfully grazing even on hilly karst terrain. Due to their longevity and good fertility, Brown cattle are gaining importance in sustainable and environmentally friendly production systems.

Breeding Purpose

The Brown breed is a dual-purpose cattle breed with a strong emphasis on milk production. The breed is now increasingly oriented toward intensive milk production based on pasture-based feeding system. In recent years, the proportion of cows included in suckler cow systems has also risen, producing weaned calves for further fattening. Brown cattle are becoming an increasingly important breed for organic milk production.
