The Slovenian Brown Hen originates from the American Rhode Island breed, which was first exhibited in the United States in 1895 and imported to Europe in 1903. Between the two World Wars, it was widespread on farms, smallholdings, and among poultry fanciers in Slovenia. Today, the breed is kept only at the Department of Animal Science, Biotechnical Faculty.
In roosters, the plumage is dark brown with a metallic sheen on the hackles and a glossy appearance, while in hens this sheen is absent. Prolonged exposure to sunlight for a long time, the dark brown colour fades. The tail feathers of roosters are dark green and black. The comb is single, medium-high, and slightly drooping; the eyes are orange. The earlobes are small—pink in hens and red in roosters. The legs are yellow with a brownish shade on the toes and lower parts.
In crossbreeding, Brown hens can be mated with roosters of the Slovenian Barred Hen to produce Prelux-G hybrids. Brown roosters can be mated with Slovenian Barred hens to obtain Prelux-Č hybrids, or with Slovenian Silver hens to obtain Prelux-R hybrids. The eggshell colour is brown.
The breed is bred and reared in poultry houses with a standard lighting program. Pullets can be moved at 16 weeks of age into floor systems with litter, combined systems with litter and slats, or into battery systems with enriched cages. The breed is used to form lines within the breed and for crossbreeding between breeds to produce commercial laying hybrids, such as Prelux-R, Prelux-G, and Prelux-Č. The main product of the breed is high-quality hatching eggs. Prelux-G cockerels are also of interest for capon production, that is, for the production of capon meat.
