Slovenian Barred Hen

Origin and Development of the Breed

The Slovenian Barred Hen was developed in the early 1970s by crossing imported Barred Plymouth Rock with White Plymouth Rock, followed by selection for suitable body weight, improved laying performance, and the barred colour pattern. The breed is kept only at the Department of Animal Science, Biotechnical Faculty.

Breed Description

Animals of this breed have a medium-high single (leaf-shaped) comb, orange eyes, and small red earlobes. The plumage is barred, with roosters displaying a characteristically lighter shade. The legs are yellow with a slight black pigmentation on the toes and lower parts of the legs; this dark shading is more pronounced in hens.

Breed Characteristics

The Slovenian Barred Hen belongs to the group of somewhat heavier laying hens. The eggshell colour is brown.

Did you know ...
  • ... hens reach 50% laying capacity at about 24 weeks of age and can produce around 285–300 eggs per year?

  • ... on average, a hen needs only about 147 g of feed to produce one egg, and the average egg weight is about 61 g?

Breeding Purpose

The breed is bred and reared in poultry houses with a standard lighting program. Pullets can be moved at 16 weeks of age into floor systems with litter, combined systems with litter and slats, or battery systems with enriched cages. The breed is used to form lines within the breed and for crossbreeding between breeds to produce commercial laying hybrids, such as Prelux-G and Prelux-Č. The main product of the breed is high-quality hatching eggs. Prelux-G cockerels are also of interest for capon production, that is, for the production of capon meat.
