The Slovenian Cold-blooded Horse originated in northeastern Slovenia and the Gorenjska region, developed from indigenous cold-blooded horses and enhanced by breeding with Percheron and Noriker stallions.
SThe Slovenian Cold-blooded Horse is a medium-sized draft breed characterized by a sturdy constitution, early maturity, good fertility, calm temperament, endurance, and a strong work ethic. Stallions typically stand between 148 and 160 cm at the withers, while mares range from 146 to 158 cm. The breed predominantly exhibits bay, chestnut, and black coat colors.
The Slovenian Cold-blooded Horse is distributed throughout Slovenia, accounting for approximately 27% of the country’s total horse population. The herdbook includes around 1,400 breeding animals. Due to the relatively high level of inbreeding within the population, the Slovenian Cold-blooded Horse is classified as a critically endangered breed.
Did You Know ...
... that larger individuals of this breed, when in good condition, can weigh over one metric ton?
A significant portion of the population is raised for meat production, including the breeding and processing of horse meat, as well as for mare’s milk production. Some breeders continue to use these horses for agricultural work and, to a lesser extent, for logging, which helps preserve the skills required for working with draft animals. They are also used for recreational driving and, less commonly, under saddle, often participating in promotional and tourist events.
